Jorge Gutierrez and freshman Allen Crabbe led a late-game rally to provide California with a 57-50 upset victory against No. 20 Temple in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.
Harper Kamp scored 13 points and Gutierrez and freshman Gary Franklin added 10 each for the Golden Bears, who will play Notre Dame in the semifinals Friday. The Owls will play Georgia in the losers bracket.
In a game where both teams played a deliberate style, shot under 40 percent and committed a combined 34 turnovers, Temple took a 45-38 with 7:42 left after two free throws by Lavoy Allen and two driving hoops by Rahlir Jefferson.
But the Bears held the Owls scoreless over the next four minutes while Gutierrez and Crabbe went to work. Crabbe started the spurt with a layup and Gutierrez followed with a 3-pointer and two free throws. Kamp scored at the hoop after an offensive rebound by Crabbe, and Franklin and Crabbe drained two shots each from the line to cap the 16-1 run with two minutes left.
The Owls showed the rust of an 11-day layoff after beating Seton Hall and Toledo. They missed their first seven shots of the game, trailed by as many as seven points in the first half and didn’t take a lead until two late buckets by Khalif Wyatt provided a 25-23 halftime lead.
Allen scored 13 points and Jefferson added 10, but Temple could only convert 2-of-19 shots from the arc.
