Chace Stanback and Oscar Bellfield combined to score 43 points Saturday as host UNLV beat No. 25 Wisconsin 68-65 to remain unbeaten.
Jordan Taylor scored a team-high 19 points for the Badgers (2-1), but missed a 3-pointer as time expired. Senior Jon Leuer finished with 10 points and was just 3 of 11 from the field. Guard Josh Gasser had seven points and forward Keaton Nankivil added five for Wisconsin.
Stanback, whose jumper gave the Rebels (3-0) a 66-65 lead with 54 seconds left, had 25 points. Bellfield scored 18 points and added four rebounds.
UNLV’s Carlos Lopez gave the Rebels a 34-33 halftime lead when he hit a baseline jumper with two seconds remaining. UNLV shot 12 of 24 (50 percent) from the field in the first half, with neither team leading by more than five points.
The game was just as close in the second half, with Wisconsin’s Jared Berggren’s layup tying the game at 51 with 8:49 remaining. Stanback gave the Rebels their biggest lead of the half at 62-58 on a layup with 3:32 left.
Ryan Evans (11 points) gave Wisconsin a 65-64 lead with two free throws with 1:10 remaining.
Picked to finish fourth in the nine-team Mountain West Conference, UNLV shot 24 of 49 (49 percent) from the field, including 9 of 18 on 3-pointers.
