J.J. Redick’s four-point play gave the Orlando Magic the lead for good in overtime in an improbable 99-98 home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
Superstar center Dwight Howard had fouled out and the Magic trailed by five points with less than 30 seconds to play in regulation. They rallied to force overtime and escaped when Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala and rookie Evan Turner both missed close-range shots in the waning seconds.
It was the third overtime game in the last five contests for the 76ers, who fell to 1-4 in OT games this season.
Redick drilled a 3-pointer and was fouled by Lou Williams. His free throw gave the Magic (27-15) a 99-96 lead with 1:43 left. A dunk by Thaddeus Young cut the deficit to one point before the misses by Iguodala and Turner.
Howard fouled out with 49 seconds left in regulation with 17 points, shooting 10-of-22 from the line. The Sixers held an 89-84 lead before Redick made a layup. After Williams split two free throws, Jason Richardson’s four-point play tied it with 17 seconds left.
Williams and Orlando's Ryan Anderson missed 3-pointers before the regulation buzzer. Anderson scored 20 points to pace the Magic and Jameer Nelson added 16 points.
Williams scored 19 points for Philadelphia (17-24). Young scored 17 points, Jrue Holiday had 16, eight rebounds and six assists and Iguodala added 15 points.
