Manny Machado had a homer and three RBIs and Jake Cronenworth and Eric Hosmer each drove in two runs Thursday afternoon as the visiting San Diego Padres celebrated Jackie Robinson Day by scoring four times in the first and two in the second en route to defeating the Pirates 8-3 in Pittsburgh.
The win gave the Padres a split of their four-game series in Pittsburgh to complete a 5-2 road trip as they head home for a weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Right-hander Chris Paddack allowed three runs (one earned) over five innings to earn his first win of the season. He walked two and struck out four. Craig Stammen worked three scoreless innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts, to pick up his first save of the season.
The Padres, who were 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position in back-to-back losses to the Pirates, had five hits in RISP situations in the first two innings.
Trent Grisham opened the first with a single, stole second and scored on Cronenworth's double. Machado followed with a two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole to make it 3-0. Hosmer followed with double and scored on a double by rookie Tucupita Marcano -- the Padres fourth extra-base hit of the inning.
Jurickson Profar doubled with two out in the second ahead of back-to-back walks issued by Pirates starter and loser Mitch Keller (1-2). Hosmer followed with a line drive, two-run single to center. Keller allowed seven runs on nine hits and three walks with a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
The Pirates got on the board in the second on back-to-back doubles by Colin Moran and Erik Gonzalez. Two walks loaded the bases with one out. But Paddack struck out Keller then retired Adam Frazier on a comebacker.
Pittsburgh's final two runs in the fifth came when right-fielder Marcano dropped a Bryan Reynolds liner for a two-run error.
Sacrifice flies by Cronenworth and Machado accounted for the Padres' final two runs.
