Pete Alonso homered in consecutive at-bats and drove in a season-high five runs as the visiting New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 9-3 on Tuesday night.
Justin Verlander (5-5) pitched six scoreless innings of two-hit ball for his 249th career victory and won consecutive starts for the first time as a Met. He struck out six, walked four and won his fifth straight regular-season decision against the Yankees.
Daniel Vogelbach also homered as the Mets improved to 11-7 this month after enduring 19 losses in 26 games last month. Jeff McNeil contributed an RBI single in the seventh and a two-run double in the ninth for the Mets' final three runs.
Alonso started his big night with an RBI single in the opening inning against Domingo German (5-7). He hit a three-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the sixth and now has 28 home runs on the season.
It was Alonso's 16th career multi-homer game and second this season. The first baseman also homered for the first time in 13 games, ending the third-longest homerless streak of his career.
Anthony Volpe hit an RBI double off Brooks Raley and Giancarlo Stanton hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Dominic Leone in the seventh before Anthony Rizzo struck out with two on to end the inning.
The Yankees lost for the 10th time in 15 games and scored their other run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by pinch hitter Ben Rortvedt in the eighth.
German allowed six runs on seven hits in six innings and lost his second straight start. He struck out nine and walked one.
The Mets capitalized on the Yankees' defensive struggles in left field to get the lead. Alonso hit a single to center field that fell between left fielder Billy McKinney and center fielder Harrison Bader, allowing Brandon Nimmo to score in the first.
In the third, German got the first two outs before Lindor hit a double that fell in front of McKinney. After Jeff McNeil walked, Alonso hit an 0-2 changeup down the line and into the left field seats.
Alonso opened the sixth by blasting a 1-1 fastball onto the netting in Monument Park beyond the center field wall. Two pitches later, Vogelbach hit an 0-1 curveball to the right-center-field seats for a 6-0 lead.
