Edward Olivares, Salvador Perez, Michael A. Taylor and Ryan O'Hearn homered as the visiting Kansas City Royals topped the Chicago White Sox 9-1 on Wednesday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
Carlos Hernandez (3-1) handcuffed the American League Central leaders for the second time in six days, yielding one run and two hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out six. It was a follow-up to a July 29 home start that saw him scatter four hits, one walk and four strikeouts in six shutout innings.
Four relievers followed Wednesday with one scoreless inning apiece to complete a four-hitter.
Jose Abreu drilled a solo home run in the fourth inning for the lone blemish against Hernandez, who joined the rotation last month after 12 relief appearances to open the season.
The long ball otherwise was Kansas City's friend. Olivares and Taylor connected for solo shots in the second and fourth innings, respectively, while Perez delivered a two-run blast in the third.
The Royals' barrage against Lucas Giolito ended a string of eight straight starts in which the White Sox right-hander had not surrendered multiple home runs. Giolito (8-8) allowed six runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
O'Hearn contributed a two-run shot against reliever Jose Ruiz in the seventh.
Chicago leads the season series with Kansas City 8-7, but the Royals have won four of the past six.
Whit Merrifield singled three times and drove in a run for the Royals, rebounding after his 0-for-4 night in Tuesday's series opener snapped a 12-game hitting streak. Perez added two hits. His homer was his club-leading 27th of the season, matching a career high produced in both 2017 and 2018.
Nicky Lopez and Taylor both had two hits and an RBI for Kansas City.
Andrew Vaughn went 2-for-2, making the White Sox rookie 3-for-5 in the first two games of the series.
Kansas City left fielder Andrew Benintendi sat out after sustaining a left shoulder strain Tuesday. He remains day-to-day.
