Jaylin Davis bombed his first major league home run, a solo shot to center field with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night, giving the host San Francisco Giants a 2-1, walk-off win over the Colorado Rockies.
Coming on the heels of an 8-5 loss in 16 innings in the series opener Tuesday, the Giants were able to square manager Bruce Bochy's career record as their skipper at 1,051-1,051 with just four games remaining before his announced retirement Sunday.
Davis, who entered the game 3-for-29 in his rookie season, capped a 2-for-4 performance with his blast off Rockies reliever DJ Johnson (0-2), who took over at the start of the inning.
The home run produced the Giants' eighth walk-off win of the season and also gave Davis his first career extra-base hit.
Remarkably, the homer also was the game's first extra-base hit.
Giants closer Will Smith (6-0), brought into a tie game in the top of the ninth, was credited with the win after striking out all three batters he faced.
The Rockies had tied the score in the seventh after Giants starter Jeff Samardzija was pulled with a shutout after six innings.
The veteran allowed five hits and one walk, and he struck out five.
The Rockies got even when Josh Fuentes, who had singled, scored on a two-out throwing error by Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.
Samardzija played a role in the game's first run in the third inning. His sacrifice advanced Mauricio Dubon, who had singled, into scoring position, and Dubon scored on a two-out single by Kevin Pillar.
Rockies starter Tim Melville limited the Giants to just the one run and four hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Dubon and Stephen Vogt joined Davis with two hits for the Giants (76-82), who were assured of a losing record with Tuesday's loss.
Fuentes and Garrett Hampson each had two hits for the Rockies (68-90), who out-hit the Giants 8-7.
