Jose Abreu and Danny Mendick each homered and four Chicago White Sox pitchers limited the visiting Los Angeles Angels, who were without Mike Trout, to five hits in a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
With Trout out because of a sore big toe on his right foot, the Angels scored their only run of the game on Shohei Ohtani's RBI single in the first inning off White Sox starter Dylan Cease.
Cease lasted only 3 1/3 innings, but Chicago got scoreless outings from relievers Josh Osich (2 2/3 innings), Aaron Bummer (two innings) and Alex Colome (one inning).
Osich (2-0) got the win over Angels reliever Jaime Barria (4-8), who gave up two runs in 4 1/3 innings.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead against Cease in the first inning. With one out, David Fletcher walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Ohtani.
The White Sox responded in the bottom of the first against Angels opener Noe Ramirez. Mendick singled, went to second on a walk to Abreu and scored on a single by James McCann.
Solo homers off Barria in the third inning by Abreu (No. 31) and in the fifth by Mendick (first of his career in five games) gave Chicago a 3-1 lead going into the latter innings.
Yolmer Sanchez's RBI single in the sixth increased the White Sox's lead to 4-1.
The White Sox scored their final run of the game in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Cordell.
Mendick, McCann and Matt Skole each had two hits for the White Sox, who avoided a three-game sweep.
Michael Hermosillo, playing in center field in place of Trout, had two hits for the Angels, who used seven pitchers.
