Pinch hitter Chris Herrmann hit a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Oakland Athletics 10-8 Tuesday night.

The Athletics' defeat clinched the American League West for the Houston Astros (100-57), and Oakland (95-63) fell 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees for the right to host the American League wild-card game on Oct. 3.

Right-hander Alex Colome (7-5) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the victory while Oakland right-hander Emilio Pagan (3-1) took the loss.

The Mariners (86-71) improved to 14-1 in extra innings this season.

Oakland had been 68-0 when leading after seven innings this season and became the last major league team to take a loss in that situation.

Trailing 8-5, Seattle began its rally in the eighth off Fernando Rodney. The right-hander walked the first two batters he faced and threw two wild pitches before allowing a two-run double to Denard Span.

The Mariners tied it with an unearned run off A's right-hander Blake Treinen in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Nelson Cruz lined a single to right field. Ryon Healy hit a grounder that third baseman Matt Chapman couldn't handle, twice bobbling the ball for an error as he attempted to get it out of his mitt.

Pinch hitter Kyle Seager then lined a run-scoring single to right to force extra innings.

The A's scored three runs in each of the first two innings off Mariners right-hander Mike Leake.

Leake lasted just 1 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.

The key hit in the first inning for the A's was a two-run single by Matt Joyce, producing a 3-0 lead.

The Mariners tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer by Cruz, his 37th of the season.

The A's regained the lead in the second as Nick Martini hit a two-run triple to right field and Jed Lowrie added a run-scoring single for a 6-3 advantage.

The Mariners got one run back in the bottom of the second, and Jean Segura hit a solo homer, his 10th, into the upper deck in left field in the third, pulling Seattle within 6-5 and helping knock out A's starter Brett Anderson.

Anderson, a left-hander, allowed five runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Oakland's Marcus Semien hit a solo homer in the fifth, his 14th, and Matt Olson added a run-scoring, ground-rule double in the sixth for an 8-5 lead.
