German Marquez pitched six strong innings as the Colorado Rockies defeated the host Seattle Mariners 7-1 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Safeco Field.
Marquez (7-8) allowed one run -- a solo homer by Denard Span with two outs in the sixth inning -- on five hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five to continue his road mastery. The right-hander is 5-3 with a 2.62 ERA away from Coors Field.
Charlie Blackmon hit a solo homer and catcher Tony Wolters, the No. 9 batter in the Colorado order, had two triples and three RBIs as the Rockies won their fourth in a row and seventh in their past eight games.
Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez (8-7) went five innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
Hernandez again failed to get out of the first inning without allowing a run. With one out, Blackmon hit a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center field, his 16th home run of the season. In 19 starts, Hernandez has allowed 21 first-inning runs.
The Rockies added two more runs in the second. With one out, Raimel Tapia hit a ground-rule double to right field. Wolters then tripled off the base of the wall in right-center. DJ LeMahieu's sacrifice fly made it 3-0.
The Rockies doubled their advantage off left-hander Roenis Elias in the sixth inning.
With one out, Ian Desmond reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jean Segura. Tapia then walked and Wolters lined a two-run triple to right field. LeMahieu followed with a ground-rule double to right to score Wolters and make it 6-0.
Carlos Gonzalez hit an RBI double in the ninth for the game's final run.
Marquez didn't allow a hit until Segura and Span hit back-to-back singles with one out in the fourth. But Marquez rebounded by striking out Seattle's Nos. 4-5 hitters, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager, to end the inning.
Wolters also had a strong night behind the plate, throwing out American League stolen-base leader Dee Gordon, who reached on an error by Nolan Arenado to open the bottom of the first. Wolters also pounced on a pitch in the dirt and flipped to Marquez to tag out Gordon trying to score in the sixth.
