OAKLAND, Calif. -- Thanks to Ben Revere's clutch hit, the Los Angeles Angels are in a playoff position.

The pinch hitter lined a tiebreaking single in the top of the 10th inning, and the Angels held on for an 8-7 victory against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night at Oakland Coliseum.

The Angels (72-67) moved past Minnesota into the second American League wild-card spot and pulled to within 2 1/2 games of the New York Yankees for the top wild card. Los Angeles leads the Twins by a half-game and the Baltimore Orioles by one game.

"Wins at this point of the year are really important," said Angels first baseman C.J. Cron, who had three hits, including a two-run homer and an RBI triple. "We were able to gain a game tonight, and we're going to come back tomorrow and try to sweep the series."

With two outs in the 10th, A's reliever Blake Treinen (1-6) hit Kaleb Cowart with a pitch. Cron singled Cowart to second, and Revere singled as left fielder Matt Joyce raced in and made a diving attempt but couldn't hold onto the ball.

"As soon as I hit it, I saw Joyce and he's coming in like a bull, he's coming forward," Revere said. "Luckily that ball just fell in front of Joyce. I thought he caught it."

Angels right-hander Eduardo Paredes survived a bases-load jam to pitch a scoreless 10th and record his first career save. Paredes retired Jed Lowrie on a fly ball to center for the final out.

Cam Bedrosian (5-4) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Cron hit his 14th home run of the season in the sixth inning. He added an RBI triple in the eighth and his crucial single in the 10th.

"He had an incredible month of August," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Cron. "Right now our lineup's much different and he might seem like an afterthought, but he's important to us."

Khris Davis hit his 38th home run of the season, a two-run shot, Joyce slugged his 22nd and rookie Matt Olson his 15th for the A's (58-80), all in a four-run fifth inning.

Olson, who had two home runs Monday against the Angels, homered for the third straight game and has seven in his past eight contests.

"When you hit three home runs and you score as many runs as we did, you expect to win games," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "The problem is we can't hold the other team down."

Lowrie had two hits, including a double, and scored twice for the A's, who extended their season-worst losing streak to eight games.

Angels right-hander Garrett Richards came off the disabled list after missing 136 games with a strained right biceps and made his second start of the season and first since April 5, when he was injured against the A's at the Coliseum.

Richards allowed one run on four hits over 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk in a no-decision. His fastball consistently hit 96 mph. Richards was expected to be limited to around 50 pitches, and finished with 52.

"This was a good one to build off of," Richards said. "I feel confident moving forward."

A's right-hander Kendall Graveman gave up four runs on five hits over five innings in a no-decision. He struck out three, walked three and threw 103 pitches. He gave up three runs in a 40-pitch third inning.

"He was one batter away from coming out," Melvin said. "He was at 40 pitches, which is max for me. He ends up getting the out and he ends up giving us five at that point."

The Angels trailed 5-4 after five innings but regained the lead 6-5 on Cron's two-run shot to left in the sixth off reliever Liam Hendriks. Oakland pulled even with a run in the bottom of the frame but left the bases loaded.

Matt Chapman led off with a walk and scored from second on Marcus Semien's double to left off reliever Troy Scribner.

The Angels regained a 7-6 lead in the eighth, and once again it was Cron delivering the big blow. With two outs and pinch runner Cowart on first, Cron lined an opposite-field triple down the right field line off Daniel Coulombe. The ball banked off two walls and past right fielder Chad Pinder as Cron raced to third for his first triple of the season.

The A's pulled even with a run in the bottom of the inning. Boog Powell hit a leadoff double off Fernando Salas, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Joyce's sacrifice fly.

Center fielder Mike Trout walked for the 13th consecutive game, matching an Angels franchise record that he shares with Albie Pearson, who accomplished the feat in 1961.

NOTES: Angels RHP Bud Norris (right knee inflammation) will be reinstated from the disabled list Wednesday. ... RHP Deolis Guerra was selected from Triple-A Salt Lake and will pitch out of the Angels' bullpen. RHP Vicente Campos was designated for assignment, opening a spot on the 40-man roster for Guerra, who pitched a scoreless third of an inning. ... Angels RHP Mike Morin, 26, was designated for assignment, opening a spot on the 40-man roster for RHP Garrett Richards, who was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. ... RHP Daniel Mengden was recalled by Oakland from Triple-A Nashville and will start Saturday against Houston in the second game of a doubleheader in place of RHP Chris Smith, who will pitch out of the bullpen. ... The A's recalled OF/INF Renato Nunez and INF Joey Wendle and selected RHP Raul Alcantara from Nashville. To make room for Alcantara on the 40-man roster, Oakland moved RHP Paul Blackburn (right hand bone bruise) to the 60-man disabled list.
