SEATTLE -- Seth Smith hit two of Seattle's five home runs in a 16-4 rout of San Diego on Tuesday afternoon at Safeco Field.
The Mariners led 16-0 after scoring in each of the first five innings. Position players Christian Bethancourt and Alexi Amarista combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning for San Diego.
Padres starter James Shields (2-7) gave up eight hits, including three homers, and 10 runs -- all earned -- in 2 2-3 innings. Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma (4-4) retired the first 12 San Diego batters, but he also gave up three home runs before leaving after the seventh inning.
Kyle Seager sparked Seattle's six-run second inning with a three-run homer, and Smith clubbed a three-homer in the third. Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-run homer in the fourth, Smith delivered a solo shot in the fifth and Adam Lind added a two-run homer in the fifth.
The runs and homers were season highs for Seattle. The Mariners started the day tied with the New York Mets for the most home runs in the majors (72).
Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano extended his streak of games reaching base safely to 29. He walked his first three times up, then left the game after flying out in the fifth.
Travis Jankowski, San Diego's rookie right fielder, hit his first major league homer, a two-run blast, to break up the shutout in the sixth inning.
Matt Kemp and Hector Sanchez also homered for the Padres.
NOTES: Seattle manager Scott Servais said SS Ketel Marte is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday night at Triple-A Tacoma. Marte is tentatively set to rejoin the Mariners on Monday, Servais said. Marte was batting .276 when he suffered a sprained thumb May 21 at Cincinnati. ... Servais said RHP Tony Zych is expected to throw off a mound next week for the first time since going on the disabled list May 3 with rotator cuff tendinitis. LHP Charlie Furbush remains "a ways off" from seeing action, Servais said. Shoulder problems have sidelined Furbush since last July. ... San Diego manager Andy Green said RHP Tyson Ross (shoulder), the club's opening-day starter, may resume throwing this week. No timetable is set for Ross' return to action. He has appeared in just the one game this season. ... After playing two day games in Seattle, the Mariners and Padres play the next two nights in San Diego. Servais asked players to travel in attire that reflects where they were raised. For example, Servais hails from Wisconsin, so he's paying tribute to football's Green Bay Packers with a green-and-yellow wardrobe topped (literally) by a "Cheesehead" hat that resembles a giant chunk of cheese. "We've got guys from six different countries," Servais said. "Very diverse, so let's have some fun with it." ... Through Monday, San Diego CF Jon Jay ranks third in the major leagues with a .441 batting average with runners in scoring position. He also ranked third in hitting with runners on base (.420). ... RHP Felix Hernandez, the all-time Mariners' wins leader, continues to post solid numbers (4-4, 2.86 earned run average), but he has occasionally been hit extremely hard the past two years. Servais said Hernandez still has quality stuff, but his pitch location was "horrendous" in his last start Friday. The light-hitting Minnesota Twins pounded Hernandez for five hits and five runs in the third inning of Seattle's 7-2 loss.
