ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Matt Wieters hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to give the Baltimore Orioles a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night in front of 40,137 at Angel Stadium.
The Orioles used the win to maintain their one-game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.
The Angels needed only one out to secure the win when Baltimore rallied against closer Joe Smith (1-3). Chris Davis singled to right field before Mark Trumbo walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Nolan Reimold.
With a 1-0 count, Wieters lined an 89 mph pitch over the left-field fence for his fourth homer of the season.
The Angels brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Gregorio Petit led off with a walk against closer Zach Britton. One out later, Petit took second base on a wild pitch, then moved to third when Kole Calhoun grounded out.
But Britton got Mike Trout to ground out for his 12th save of the season, preserving the victory for right-hander Brad Brach (4-0).
The Orioles' rally cost Los Angeles right-hander Matt Shoemaker his first win since April 13. Shoemaker amassed a career-high 12 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings, retired the first 14 Orioles he faced, conceded three hits and issued no walks.
Wieters ended Shoemaker's perfect game by lining a double with two outs in the top of the fifth. Left fielder Rafael Garcia tried to make a diving backhanded catch, but the ball fell about 10 inches away from his glove.
Wieters was the only Orioles player to get into scoring position until the ninth.
The Angels broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the bottom of the seventh against right-hander Kevin Gausman. Petit lined a double off the base of the center-field fence for his third hit of the game, then came home when Yunel Escobar hit a slow line drive over second baseman Jonathan Schoop's glove.
Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout followed with walks against right-handed reliever Vance Worley. But Brach defused the threat by making Albert Pujols ground out.
Gausman, whose fastball reached 99 mph, finished with his fourth quality start of the season. The right-hander collected six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, threw 112 pitches and allowed allowing one run, one walk and eight hits.
