Dodgers 6, Marlins 5: Yasiel Puig belted a three-run homer and knocked in four in all as Los Angeles held on to hand visiting Miami its fourth consecutive loss in the opener of a three-game series.
Dan Haren (5-1) yielded three runs on seven hits over seven innings and added an RBI single for the win before Kenley Jansen notched his 12th save with a perfect ninth. Puig was 1-for-3 with two walks to extend his hitting streak with 12 games while Matt Kemp had a single and scored twice for Los Angeles in his 1,000th career game.
Giancarlo Stanton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, Christian Yelich homered among two hits and Reed Johnson had a two-run blast for the Marlins. Miami starter Tom Koehler (3-3) allowed four runs on six hits and five walks over 3 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Yelich singled, stole second and later scored on Stanton’s groundout in the first inning and Haren tied it with a two-out RBI single in the second. Yelich drilled a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall with one out in the third before Derek Dietrich doubled and scored on Stanton’s single in the third for a 3-1 lead.
After two walks, Puig hammered the first pitch he saw into the left-center field seats off Koehler for a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Andre Ethier’s RBI single and a bases-loaded walk by Puig increased the Dodgers’ advantage to three in the fifth, but Johnson’s pinch-hit homer off Brian Wilson in the eighth pulled the Marlins within 6-5.
