Indians 2, White Sox 1 (10): Pinch-hitter David Murphy singled with one out and the bases loaded in the 10th inning as host Cleveland took the opener of the three-game series.
Yan Gomes sparked the winning rally with a leadoff triple against Maikel Cleto (0-1) and the next two batters were walked intentionally before Eric Surkamp struck out Jason Kipnis. Ronald Belisario came on to face Murphy, who lined a single to center field that plated pinch-runner Chris Dickerson with the decisive run as Cleveland improved to 2-3 on its 11-game homestand.
Carlos Santana recorded an RBI single and Tyler Holt notched a pair of hits for the Indians, who remained six games behind first-place Kansas City in the American League Central but climbed within four of Detroit for the second AL wild-card spot. C.C. Lee (1-1) picked up his first career win after recording two outs in the 10th to escape a bases-loaded jam.
Alexei Ramirez belted a solo homer and rookie Jose Abreu collected two hits for the White Sox, who lost two of three to Cleveland at home last week. Starter Chris Sale yielded one run and five hits over six innings as he lowered his AL-leading ERA to 2.09.
Cleveland grabbed an early lead as Michael Brantley hit a two-out single in the first inning, stole second and went to third on Chicago catcher Tyler Flowers' throwing error before scoring on a base hit by Santana. The White Sox pulled even in the third, when Ramirez deposited a 2-2 offering over the wall in left-center field for his 14th blast.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago 1B Paul Konerko, who is retiring at season's end, will miss at least a week with a fractured left hand. ... Cleveland starter T.J. House matched Sale's performance, yielding one run and seven hits with seven strikeouts in as many innings. ... Abreu extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
