Royals 5, Tigers 2: Eric Hosmer had three hits, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning, as host Kansas City took two of three from American League Central-leading Detroit.

Bruce Chen (7-2) collected his second win in three starts, allowing two runs over seven innings. Billy Butler and Alex Gordon added RBI singles and Emilio Bonifacio scored twice for the Royals, who have won 11 of 15 and are 3 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the second of two AL wild-card spots.

Doug Fister (12-8) was tagged for five runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings for the Tigers, who maintained their 5 1/2-game division lead over Cleveland. Jose Iglesias homered for the second time since joining Detroit at the trade deadline.

Iglesias, who was clearly still hobbled following a two-game absence because of shin splints, staked Detroit to an early lead when he sent a 0-1 slider just over the fence in left-center for a two-run shot. Butler halved the deficit in the fourth as he followed a leadoff walk to Bonifacio and single by Hosmer with a hit to left.

Kansas City jumped ahead in the next inning as Gordon and Bonifacio each singled with two outs ahead of Hosmer, who ended a 15-game homerless drought with a three-run shot to center. Gordon added an RBI single in the seventh and Greg Holland worked around a hit in the ninth for his 40th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chen is 4-2 with a 2.99 ERA in 11 starts since joining the rotation July 12. … Detroit - the second-highest scoring team in the majors - has been held to three runs or fewer in five of its seven games in September. … Butler, who went 2-for-4, is 12-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak.
