Brewers 4, Braves 0: Carlos Gomez hit a home run that set off a bench-clearing skirmish and Kyle Lohse threw a two-hit shutout as visiting Milwaukee claimed the series and knocked Atlanta out of the top spot in the National League.
Lohse (11-10) allowed a bunt single to Andrelton Simmons to lead off the first, then retired 20 straight before Evan Gattis' two-out single in the seventh. The 34-year-old right-hander struck out five and didn't issue a walk while tossing his sixth career shutout.
Atlanta starter Paul Maholm (10-11) allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out seven over seven frames as the Braves fell a half-game behind St. Louis for the best record in the NL.
The second batter of the game, Gomez drove an 0-1 changeup out to left for a 1-0 lead. Sean Halton made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Norichika Aoki added RBI singles in the seventh and ninth among his three hits.
Gomez admired his blast for several seconds before beginning his trot, and he jawed with several Braves - including Maholm and first baseman Freddie Freeman - as he rounded the bases. Catcher Brian McCann cut off Gomez before he could reach home plate and the duo ignited a shouting match that prompted both benches to empty.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gomez and Freeman were ejected along with Atlanta backup C Gerald Laird. … Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez left in the third inning with a sore left knee. … Milwaukee SS Jean Segura missed a seventh consecutive game with a strained left hamstring but hopes to play at some point during a season-ending four-game road set with the New York Mets.
