Padres 2, Diamondbacks 1: Chris Denorfia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Padres handed Arizona its first loss.
Working in relief of starter Joe Saunders, David Hernandez (0-1) walked Cameron Maybin before giving up Denorfia’s home run just over the outstretched glove of Chris Young at the center field wall.
Ernesto Frieri (1-0) earned the win in relief, and Huston Street retired the Diamondbacks in order for his first save.
Saunders allowed four hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings, extending his consecutive scoreless inning streak to 22 2/3 against the Padres.
The Diamondbacks scored their lone run in the first inning when Cory Luebke (0-2) walked Jason Kubel with the bases loaded. Luebke settled down after walking four in the first inning and struck out five over 5 1/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Padres catcher Nick Hundley is hitless in 15 at-bats after going 0-for-2 on Wednesday…Justin Upton returned to the starting lineup after not starting Tuesday with a sore left thumb…Willie Bloomquist’s triple in the second inning was reviewed using instant replay to confirm that it didn’t clear the wall.
