Red Sox 7, Indians 5: Dustin Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 12 games with three hits and three RBIs and righthander Clay Buchholz delivered his best performance of the season as Boston snapped a six-game slide at home.
Buchholz (4-1) yielded four runs (three earned) and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. He had allowed five or more earned runs in each of his first six outings.
Buchholz left with the bases loaded and a 7-1 lead. Rich Hill walked Travis Hafner to force in a run, an error by rookie third baseman Will Middlebrooks brought home another and Michael Brantley added to the damage with an RBI single off Andrew Miller.
Alfredo Aceves, the sixth Boston pitcher, allowed a walk and two hits in the ninth, including an RBI single to Brantley before earning his sixth save in eight chances.
The Red Sox avoided their longest losing streak at Fenway Park since 1994 and won for only the second time in their last 10 games overall by roughing up Ubaldo Jimenez (3-3) for seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Jimenez also walked five.
Middlebrooks and Pedroia had two-run doubles in the first and second inning, respectively, and Boston added three runs in the fifth on Cody Ross’ RBI double, Ryan Sweeney’s run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly by Pedroia.
Carlos Santana had an RBI single in the first for Cleveland.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jimenez’s only other appearance at Fenway Park came in Game 2 of the 2007 World Series, when he allowed two runs, three hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings in Boston’s 2-1 victory over Colorado. … Cleveland third base coach Steve Smith was ejected in the second inning by home plate umpire Derryl Cousins after Jack Hannahan was thrown out by left fielder Daniel Nava. Replays revealed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia blocked Hannahan off the plate with his left foot. … The Indians fell to 10-4 on the road, still the best in the major leagues. … Boston is 2-11 in its last 13 games at home. … Buchholz lowered his ERA from 9.09 to 8.31. … Cleveland’s Jason Kipnis went 2-for-4 and is 10-for-25 lifetime against the Red Sox.
