Stephen Drew homered and had four RBIs and Kelly Johnson and Chris Young also homered as the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the visiting Colorado Rockies 10-9 on Thursday night.
Drew had a run-scoring single in the fourth, a two-run triple in the fifth and a solo homer in the seventh to help Arizona finish a three-game sweep of the Rockies, who find themselves 3 1/2 games behind San Francisco in the National League West.
Johnson had three hits, including a two-homer in the third to give the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead. Young homered in the eighth to finish off Arizona’s assault against six Colorado pitchers.
Carlos Gonzalez had six RBIs for the Rockies.
Colorado trailed 8-2 after six innings but got back into the contest after Gonzalez hit a grand-slam homer in the seventh.
Arizona led 10-6 entering the ninth but Gonzalez added a two-run single and the Rockies pulled within one run on Troy Tulowitzki’s groundout. Arizona’s Juan Gutierrez got out of a two-out, two-on jam by striking out Melvin Mora for his 12th save.
Cole Gillespie also had three hits for Arizona. Ryan Spilborghs had two RBIs for Colorado.
Arizona starter Ian Kennedy was pulled after four innings despite allowing one run and three hits. Reliever D.J. Carrasco (3-2) was credited with the victory.
Rockies starter Jeff Francis (4-6) lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs and six hits.
