Islanders 3, Oilers 2: Casey Cizikas scored his first goal in over two months with 4:37 remaining in the third period to snap a tie as New York skated to its eighth straight home victory over Edmonton.
Former Oiler Colin McDonald tallied for the second straight contest and added an assist for the Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders, who have won three of their last four overall and avenged a 5-2 setback to the Western Conference cellar-dwelling Oilers on Jan. 4. Josh Bailey also tallied, defenseman Thomas Hickey notched two assists and All-Star Jaroslav Halak finished with 34 saves to improve to 8-2-1 lifetime against Edmonton.
Edmonton's Ryan Hamilton converted a power-play opportunity for his first career goal hours after being recalled from Oklahoma City of the American Hockey League. Anton Lander also tallied with the man advantage for the Oilers, who fell to 1-2-0 on their season-high six-game road trip.
Edmonton recorded 12 of the first 15 shots of the third period, but New York benefited from McDonald extending his body to tap a loose puck to Cizikas in the slot. The fourth-liner made no mistake, beating Viktor Fasth (25 saves) for his first goal since his game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Ottawa on Dec. 4.
Rookie Anders Lee was whistled for hooking and Nail Yakupov's shot from the left faceoff circle was tipped home by Hamilton midway through the first period to open the scoring. McDonald backhanded a rebound home from the right doorstep three minutes later and New York seized a 2-1 lead as Bailey deflected Hickey's shot past Fasth at 11:27 of the second before Lander's one-timer from the slot forged a tie.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Edmonton placed LWs Taylor Hall and Benoit Pouliot on injured reserve, with the former expected to miss as many as six weeks due to an ailing left ankle. Pouliot is nursing a foot injury, but interim coach Todd Nelson believes he could return for Thursday's game at Montreal. ... Bailey took issue with Oilers C Matt Hendricks sending Islanders captain John Tavares into the boards in the second period. Bailey and Hendricks each received a roughing penalty and the former also was handed a cross-checking minor. ... Yakupov, who scored in Edmonton's 2-1 win over New Jersey on Monday, notched an assist to record a point in back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 6-7.
