Devils 5, Hurricanes 2: Jaromir Jagr had a goal and two assists and visiting New Jersey scored four times in the third period to snap a three-game losing streak.
Dainius Zubrus had a goal and an assist and Adam Henrique and Andrei Loktionov also scored in the third-period eruption as the Devils avenged Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Carolina in the back end of a home-and-home series. Defenseman Mark Fayne added his first goal of the season and Cory Schneider made 16 saves for his second straight win as New Jersey put up more than two goals for the second time in his 11 starts.
Jeff Skinner and Jordan Staal scored second-period goals for the Hurricanes, who had their modest two-game winning streak halted and fell to 2-4-1 in their last seven. Cam Ward turned aside 26 shots for Carolina.
With the Devils trailing 2-1 entering the final 20 minutes, Loktionov leveled it at 8:43 before Henrique put his team ahead to stay on the power play at 12:02, chipping home a loose puck from the slot. Zubrus redirected a shot by Jon Merrill - who earned his first NHL point - 1:50 later before Jagr completed the blitz with his 692th goal, tying Steve Yzerman for eight place on the career list.
The Hurricanes erased a 1-0 deficit when Skinner scored at 1:53 of the second, collected a rebound of defenseman Ryan Murphy's one-timer from the right point and whistling a shot past Schneider top shelf. Staal put Carolina ahead just under four minutes later when blue-liner Justin Faulk sprang him on a breakaway with a perfect pass from behind his own goal line and Staal sent a wrist shot low and past the glove side of Schneider.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jagr's two assists gave him 1,018 for his career, breaking a tie with Joe Sakic and moving him into sole possession of 11th place on the all-time list. ... Hurricanes F Kevin Westgarth sat out while serving the second of his two-game suspension while D Andrej Sekera underwent an MRI exam Friday for an upper-body and also was sidelined. ... Devils RW Damien Brunner assisted on Loktionov's tally, halting a 12-game points drought.
