Flames 4, Oilers 1: Sven Baertschi recorded his first goal and chipped in an assist as visiting Calgary added to rival Edmonton’s rapidly diminishing playoff chances.
Max Reinhart scored his first career goal, Mikael Backlund tallied and defenseman Dennis Wideman converted a power-play chance for the Flames, who were without Curtis Glencross (illness) and Alex Tanguay (knee). Joey MacDonald made 28 saves for Calgary.
Lennart Petrell scored the lone goal and Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 34 shots for the Oilers, who have dropped five straight to fall six points behind the eighth-place Dallas Stars in the Western Conference.
Backlund struck 26 seconds into the game, firing a wrist shot over Khabibulin’s right shoulder. Petrell tied it 78 seconds later off a nice feed from Ryan Jones, but Wideman cleaned up Tim Jackman’s rebound 1:55 into the second to put the Flames on top for good.
Baertschi beat Khabibulin from the slot at 5:13 to make it 3-1. Reinhart took advantage of a turnover in the offensive zone and banged the puck off the far post from the right faceoff circle midway through the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Baertschi, 20, scored three times in a five-game span last season but had yet to tally through 13 games in 2013. … The Oilers had taken back-to-back games from the Flames earlier this month by a combined 12-3 score. … MacDonald has allowed a total of four goals in winning his last three starts.
