David Garrard threw a career-high four touchdowns and ran for another and the Jacksonville Jaguars intercepted Jon Kitna four times en route to a 35-17 victory over the host Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
Mike Sims-Walker had eight catches for a career-high 153 yards and a score and Maurice Jones Drew rushed for a season-high 135 yards on 27 carries for Jacksonville (4-4), which entered the game averaging 18.6 points per game.
Garrard, who missed last week’s 42-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with a concussion, completed his first 12 passes and finished 17 of 21 for 260 yards. He threw a 10-yard touchdown to Sims-Walker and a 42-yarder to tight end Marcedes Lewis to build a 14-3 halftime lead.
Kitna played well despite making his first start in over two years after Tony Romo suffered a broken collarbone in last week’s loss to the New York Giants. He completed 34 of 49 passes for 379 yards and a touchdown, and two of his interceptions were on tipped passes that could have been caught.
But the Cowboys (1-6) once again couldn’t finish off drives. They had just one field goal to show for five possessions inside Jacksonville territory in the first half, including Marion Barber being stuffed on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line late in the first half which would have cut the deficit to 14-10.
Garrard threw a 15-yard TD pass to Mike Thomas and another short scoring pass to Lewis on the Jaguars’ first two possessions of the third quarter to provide a comfortable 28-3 lead.
