Freshman Chet Holmgren scored a career-best 23 points and also contributed 12 rebounds and four blocked shots as second-ranked Gonzaga cruised to a 92-62 victory over host San Diego on Thursday night in West Coast Conference play.
Andrew Nembhard recorded 14 points and seven assists as the Bulldogs (18-2, 7-0 WCC) won their 11th consecutive game. Drew Timme added 13 points and eight rebounds, Julian Strawther had 11 points and eight boards and Anton Watson also scored 11 points for Gonzaga.
The Bulldogs, who never trailed, have won their seven WCC games by an average of 29.1 points. Gonzaga also has defeated the Toreros 15 straight times and 48 of the past 51 meetings.
Jase Townsend scored 13 points for San Diego (13-10, 6-4), which lost for just the third time in its past nine games. Marcellus Earlington added 12 points for the Toreros, Joey Calcaterra had 11 and Wayne McKinney III scored 10.
Rasir Bolton tallied 10 points for the Bulldogs, who shot 56.7 percent from the field, including 5 of 12 from 3-point range, and held a 45-31 rebounding edge. Holmgren was 9 of 12 from the field and 3 of 5 from long range.
San Diego made just 35.5 percent of its shots and was 5 of 14 from behind the arc.
The Toreros used an 11-4 run early in the second half to pull within 44-35 on Earlington's 3-pointer with 16:31 remaining.
Gonzaga answered with a 10-2 burst, capped by Strawther's 3-pointer that made it a 17-point margin with 14:21 left.
Holmgren helped put the game away by scoring all the points during an 11-1 run over 1:38 that pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 75-50 with 7:12 left.
The 7-footer knocked down two 3-pointers in a 32-second span to increase the lead to 20 for the first time. Then he blocked a shot by San Diego's Terrell Brown, collected the rebound and drove the length of the court for a layup.
On Gonzaga's next possession, Holmgren swished another trey to make it a 25-point advantage.
Holmgren had nine points and five rebounds in the first half as the Bulldogs led 38-24 at the break.
The score was tied at 12 six-plus minutes in before Gonzaga rattled off nine straight points. The Bulldogs' biggest first-half lead was 16.
