Wendell Mitchell scored 23 points, capped by a fallaway 3-pointer with 48 seconds remaining, as visiting Texas A&M pushed its way past Tennessee, 63-58, on Tuesday in Southeastern Conference action in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Aggies led by one point a halftime and by three after two free throws by Josh Nebo with 3:58 to play.
Nebo, the Aggies' leading scorer this season, was shackled with early foul trouble and didn't even attempt a shot until just 2:30 remained in the game. That bucket, his only one in the win, garnered Texas A&M a 53-50 advantage.
Tennessee's Jordan Bowden tied the game at 53 with a 3-pointer with 1:24 left. But Mitchell's long-distance dagger and his two free throws 12 seconds later gave the Aggies all they needed to hold on.
Quenton Jackson added 11 points for Texas A&M (10-9, 4-3 SEC) before fouling out with 3:23 to play. The win gave the Aggies, which shot just 30.4 percent but outrebounded Tennessee 46-21, two victories in their past five games.
John Fulkerson led the Volunteers (12-8, 4-3) with 15 points. Bowden and Yves Pons added 13 and 10 points.
The Volunteers made six straight shots while Texas A&M was missing five in a row over a three and a half-minute stretch of the first half to take a 20-14 lead with 5:48 to play before intermission.
Tennessee suffered through a two and a half-minute scoring drought that allowed the Aggies to tie and then take a 25-24 lead at halftime.
Mitchell led all scorers in the half with 8 points while James paced the Volunteers with 7 points on 3 of 3 shooting from the floor.
After Tennessee staked itself to a seven-point lead early in the second half, the Aggies responded with an 8-0 run over nearly five minutes that netted a 40-39 lead. The Volunteers missed six straight shots and had three turnovers in that A&M uprising.
Bowden answered with a dunk and a three-point play to push Tennessee back in front but that was short-lived as points were at a premium down the stretch.
