CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- After dropping their first home game in nearly two years on Saturday, No. 14 Virginia rebounded with a 76-53 thrashing of East Carolina on Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia (8-1) led for all but four minutes of the game as it shot 56.6 percent for the game and knocked down nine 3-pointers. The Pirates entered the game with the nation's fifth-best field goal percentage defense, but were lit up by the hot-shooting Cavaliers.

"Certainly," Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said after being asked if he was pleased in how his team bounced back from the West Virginia loss. "I challenged all of them. All of our players have a hunger and a heart about them. We are a blue-collared program and if we are, it will show up in our effort."

Guard Kyle Guy led the Cavaliers with 13 points.

"I talked to the coaches after the WVU game and asked them what I could do to play more," Guy said after having limited minutes against the Mountaineers. "I just know I can help this team win. I'm not complaining about my minutes at all. I just want our team to win."

London Perrantes, Marial Shayok and Mamadi Diakite each finished with 12 points, and Perrantes added five of Virginia's 22 assists.

"ECU played a lot of zone early and we kind of shot them out of it," Bennett said. "I thought we made them earn most of their shots on the defensive end I was pleased with that effort."

East Carolina (7-3) got a game-high 17 points from guard Jeremy Sheppard. B.J. Tyson added 10 but was limited to just two in the second half. The Pirates scored just 10 points in the paint as they were outscored in that category by 26. East Carolina also got just 28 points from their bench in comparison to 47 by Virginia.

"Virginia is a great team," Pirates head coach Jeff Lebo said. "They shot it outstanding, one of their better shooting nights they've had. I knew we'd get a spirited effort from them at home after their loss."

After beginning the game 1 of 9 from the 3-point arc, Virginia connected on its final seven attempts of the half as it used a 27-4 run over 9:08 to take a 42-20 lead into the halftime break.

"We were OK up until about that 10-minute mark when they rattled off some threes," Lebo said. "They didn't start off well but when they made a bunch of them in a row, that was really the difference in the game."

The Cavaliers shot 58 percent in the half and knocked down eight triples. Guy hit three of his four 3-point attempts and tallied nine first-half points. Perrantes started 0 of 2 from the field but poured in 10 points before the break.

East Carolina did the opposite of the Cavaliers and started hot from the field only to struggle later in the half. The Pirates shot just 33 percent before intermission and were led by Tyson, who scored eight points.

For the game, East Carolina made 36.7 percent of its field-goal attempts.
