Knicks 89, Warriors 84: J.R. Smith scored 21 points as New York held off host Golden State to draw closer to a playoff spot.
Carmelo Anthony added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks, who pulled within one game of the slumping Atlanta Hawks for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference. Amar’e Stoudemire contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds while Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 15 off the bench for New York.
Stephen Curry scored 32 points to lead the Warriors, who were without the starting frontcourt of David Lee and Andrew Bogut. Klay Thompson added 15 points and Andre Iguodala scored 12 as Golden State dropped two games behind the Portland Trail Blazers in the race for the No. 5 spot in the West.
Curry buried a pair of 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter and draw the Warriors within 74-72, and another from beyond the arc knotted it at 81 and forced a Knicks timeout with 2:42 to play. New York used a 6-3 burst over the next two minutes to regain the lead and Curry misfired from beyond the arc before turning it over on the final possession.
The Warriors knocked down five 3-pointers in the first quarter to help grab a 32-22 lead but went cold as the Knicks fought back in the second, closing the frame with a 15-0 run behind 10 points from Smith to take a 56-44 lead into the break. Curry stepped up with 12 points in the third quarter to help Golden State chop the deficit to eight points heading into the final frame.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lee (hamstring) could return soon while Bogut (groin) is expected to miss at least the next two contests. … Jermaine O’Neal grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Warriors win the battle of the boards 46-40 despite missing Bogut and Lee. … The Knicks finish up their five-game road trip at the Utah Jazz on Monday.
