Sonny Weems’ 3-point basket with 7.1 seconds left provided the tie-breaking points and lifted the Toronto Raptors a huge 110-106 upset of the host Orlando Magic on Friday.
Andrea Bargnani scored 27 points and DeMar DeRozan added a career-high 26 points to go with seven rebounds as Toronto (2-7) snapped a six-game losing skid. The loss was the second straight consecutive home defeat for Orlando (5-3).
Dwight Howard led the Magic with 25 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots but made just 7-of-17 free throws. Orlando’s Mikael Pietrus tallied 24 points on eight 3-point baskets.
Pietrus’ seventh 3-pointer tied the score at 103 with 28.8 seconds left in regulation as Orlando rallied from a nine-point, mid-fourth quarter deficit. Weems, who scored 14 points, then nailed the decisive trey.
Orlando had another chance to tie but twice failed to execute on the inbound pass, as after a timeout Jose Calderon stole Pietrus’ pass and nailed both free throws to make it 108-103.
Pietrus nailed his final three of the night to cut it back to a two-point lead, but DeRozan iced the game with two more free throws with 0.7 seconds left.
Jarrett Jack added 13 points and Reggie Evans grabbed 12 rebounds for Toronto, which entered the contest with the second-worst record in the NBA, ahead of only the Los Angeles Clippers.
Jameer Nelson added 23 points and eight assists for Orlando.
