Marcus Stroman allowed an unearned run over six innings, rookie Miguel Amaya had three hits, including his first career homer, and Yan Gomes and Trey Mancini also went deep as the visiting Chicago Cubs won 7-1 over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
After tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout against Tampa Bay on Monday, Stroman (6-4) overcame four hits and three walks allowed, yielding only a third-inning run. The right-hander also struck out six for his MLB-leading 11th quality start.
Meanwhile, Chicago's offense broke out with 11 hits after being held to two runs and six hits while splitting the first two of this wraparound, four-game set. Dansby Swanson had a two-run double, while Gomes and Nico Hoerner added two hits apiece for the Cubs, who are 4-2 versus San Diego this season.
Fernando Tatis Jr. had two of the five hits for the Padres, who went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position while falling to 13-17 at home. San Diego's Ryan Weathers (1-4) lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and Chicago's first five runs.
After being held to two hits during Saturday's 6-0 loss, the Cubs exceeded that total in the first inning Sunday. Hoerner led off with a double and scored on Ian Happ's infield single and throwing error by Manny Machado. Patrick Wisdom singled for the Cubs' third hit but Happ was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Chicago added on in the second to chase Weathers. Gomes opened with a blast over the wall just to the left of straight-away center field, and Mancini followed with a drive into the left-field seats. Later in the inning, Swanson drove home two with a double against Weathers, who was pulled a batter later.
The Cubs didn't stop against Padres reliever Drew Carlton in the third. Gomes singled and later scored on the milestone drive off the facade in the left-center-field seats from Amaya, who was just recalled from Triple-A Iowa and played his seventh MLB contest.
San Diego got to Stroman in the third, ending his 16-inning scoreless streak. Trent Grisham reached on Hoerner's fielding error, went to third on Tatis' single and scored on Juan Soto's grounder to first base.
