Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim hit a pair of first-inning, two-run doubles off Austin Gomber and Kim later hit a solo homer as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting Colorado Rockies 8-1 to gain a split of a four-game series.
The three RBIs were a career-high for Kim, who played shortstop in place of the injured Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis is on the 10-day injured list with a partial dislocation of his left shoulder.
It was the shortest career start for Gomber (8-6), who departed after giving up four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the first inning.
Right-hander Reiss Knehr, who was called up from Triple-A El Paso to replace injured scheduled starter Chris Paddack (left oblique strain), started and worked the first three innings. He allowed two hits, including Sam Hilliard's solo homer with two out in the second, with two strikeouts.
It became a bullpen game with six Padres relievers each working a scoreless inning. Craig Stammen (5-2) followed Knehr and was credited with the win. He was followed by Tim Hill, Pierce Johnson, Drew Pomeranz, Emilio Pagan and Miguel Diaz. The relievers combined to allow five hits.
Adam Frazier started the Padres' four-run first by drawing a walk from Gomber. Manny Machado followed with a single and Cronenworth followed with his two-run double to center. Wil Myers then drew a walk and Austin Nola singled to load the bases. Kim followed with his two-run double to left.
The Padres added single runs in four straight innings starting with the fourth, when Eric Hosmer plated Jake Marisnick (hit by pitch) with a pinch-hit double. Myers followed Cronenworth's second double with an RBI single in the fifth, Kim hit his sixth homer in the sixth (off Antonio Santos) and Nola drove in the game's final run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Going into Sunday, the Rockies had won two straight games in the series and four of their last five in San Diego. They are 13-40 on the road this season.
