One Carlos shined, but probably not the one most would expect.
Kansas City's Carlos Hernandez threw six scoreless innings Thursday as the host Royals defeated Carlos Rodon and the Chicago White Sox 5-0 in brutal heat in the final game of a four-game series. The Royals took three of the four games of the series with the first-place White Sox.
The game-time temperature was 95 degrees, with a heat index of 106 that rose to 109 by the eighth inning.
Salvador Perez's two-run home run in the first provided all the offense the Royals would need.
Hernandez (2-1) gave up four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. He only allowed one runner to reach third base. The Royals got two innings of scoreless relief from Richard Lovelady. Wade Davis pitched the ninth.
Rodon (8-5) took the loss. He failed to retire the Royals in order in any of his four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out four.
The White Sox were playing without outfielder Eloy Jimenez (right groin tightness) and Jose Abreu (stiff neck). Jimenez missed the first 99 games with a torn left pectoral tendon suffered in a spring training game March 24, before returning Monday. He left Wednesday's game in the ninth inning.
The Royals got to Rodon out of the gate. Carlos Santana beat out an infield hit to deep short. Perez then hit his 25th home run of the season, a 446-foot shot to left center.
Michael A. Taylor followed suit with a 432-foot home run to left center leading off the second. The ball was carrying because of the heat and humidity.
Hunter Dozier's sacrifice fly in the third scored Santana.
After taking an inning off, the Royals' offense revved it up again in the fifth. Jorge Soler hit a ball to deep third and reached on what was ruled an error. He went to third on Dozier's double to right and scored on Taylor's sacrifice fly.
