C.J. Cron blasted a grand slam and Garrett Hampson followed with a homer in the first inning as the Colorado Rockies opened their four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 7-3 win on Thursday in Denver.
All of the early damage came against Milwaukee ace Brandon Woodruff (5-3), who entered with a 1.25 ERA over his past 12 starts.
German Marquez (5-6) allowed one hit over six scoreless innings for Colorado, which matched a season high with its fourth straight win. Marquez walked three and struck out two.
The Brewers were held to three hits while losing their fourth in a row. Milwaukee has totaled 16 hits and seven runs during the skid.
Woodruff settled in after the first-inning outburst and gave up five runs on five hits over five frames. He walked two and fanned five.
The Rockies had one on with two outs in the first before Trevor Story singled and Ryan McMahon walked to load the bases.
Cron then deposited Woodruff's 1-1 offering into the right field bleachers for his third homer in his past four games. Hampson followed with a home run to left field before Elias Diaz grounded out to end the inning.
The Brewers had two on and one out in the sixth, but Marquez induced a double-play grounder from Avisail Garcia to end the inning.
Colorado added to its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Raimel Tapia extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single and advanced to second on a throwing error before scoring on Yonathan Daza's single.
Tapia is batting .438 (28-for-64) with 12 doubles and eight RBIs during his hitting streak.
Milwaukee snapped a 12-inning scoreless streak in the seventh. Ben Bowden walked the bases loaded and was replaced by Yency Almonte, who surrendered Luis Urias' three-run double to left field.
The teams combined for seven errors, including four by the Brewers.
Hampson had two hits and scored two runs for Colorado, which improved to 24-14 at Coors Field this season.
