Khris Davis hit his major-league-leading 48th home run, and Jed Lowrie also homered and drove in two runs to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night at Anaheim, Calif.

Davis, who also upped his RBI total to 123, tied Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx (1933) for the fourth best single-season home run total in A's history. Foxx also holds the team record with 58 in 1932, followed by Mark McGwire, who had 52 in 1996 and 49 in 1987.

Trevor Cahill (7-4), who entered the contest in the second inning after "opener" Liam Hendriks pitched a scoreless first, picked up the victory for Oakland (97-64), allowing an unearned run and one hit over four innings. He walked one and struck out two. Blake Treinen notched his 38th save.

Tyler Skaggs (8-10) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss for Los Angeles (79-82), which had a four-game winning streak snapped and clinched its third consecutive losing season.

Davis gave the A's a 2-0 lead in the first inning when he lined an opposite-field homer over the 365-foot sign in right, driving in Matt Chapman, who had walked. It was the 100th run scored this season by Chapman to go along with 42 doubles and 24 home runs, marking just the seventh time in A's history that a player collected 100 runs, 40 doubles and 20 homers in a season.

Oakland extended its lead to 3-0 in the third when Ramon Laureano doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lowrie.

After the Angels cut it to 3-1 on an RBI single by Kaleb Cowart in the fifth, Lowrie hit reliever Jim Johnson's first pitch in the sixth inning over the fence in center for his 23rd homer of the season, breaking a tie with Coco Crisp (2013) for most home runs in Oakland history by a switch-hitter.

The Angels cut it to 4-2 in the seventh when reliever Fernando Rodney gave up a bloop single to Andrelton Simmons and three walks, the final one to Jose Fernandez to force in Simmons. But Rodney got out of the jam by getting Mike Trout to fly out to deep right field.

Stephen Piscotty's sacrifice fly in the eighth ended the scoring.
