Kole Calhoun hit a game-ending home run in the 10th inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Friday night.
Calhoun's 12th home run of the season came on the first pitch against Mariners reliever Juan Nicasio (1-5).
The Mariners had a chance to take the lead in the ninth inning, putting two runners on base with no outs, but Ryon Healy struck out, Chris Herrmann was robbed when his grounder down the line was stopped by Angels first baseman Albert Pujols and Ben Gamel struck out against reliever Jose Alvarez.
They also had a chance to take the lead in the 10th inning, but Dee Gordon was thrown out trying to steal home on the back half of a double-steal with one out.
Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney went eight strong innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts while throwing just 81 pitches. Jim Johnson (3-2) earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief.
Trailing 3-0, the Mariners began to rally in the fifth inning. Mike Zunino hit a solo home run in the frame, and Nelson Cruz added his own solo shot in the seventh off Heaney.
Seattle tied the game in the eighth inning on a bloop RBI single from Guillermo Heredia off Heaney. Zunino set up the scoring chance with a leadoff double, with pinch runner Andrew Romine scoring the run.
Mariners starter Wade LeBlanc gave up three runs on five hits over six innings with six strikeouts. The left-hander was coming off a 10-strikeout performance against the Chicago White Sox last Friday.
Albert Pujols had a second-inning double to give him 3,061 hits and move him past Craig Biggio and into sole possession of 24th on the all-time hit list. Next up at No. 23 is Ichiro Suzuki, who has 3,089 hits.
Pujols' double in the second was followed by an Ian Kinsler walk and a Jose Briceno single to load the bases. Calhoun then crushed a ground-rule double to right field to give the Angels their first runs of the game. David Fletcher added a sacrifice fly in the inning for a 3-0 lead.
The Mariners still lead the season series 7-6 but are just 1-3 at Angel Stadium, where the last six games between the two teams will take place.
The Angels won their third consecutive game but are just 4-4 to start the second half and 5-6 over their last 11 games.
