MIAMI -- Frustrated is a fair way to describe how rookie outfielder Nick Williams was feeling Sunday afternoon.

He had stranded the bases loaded with one out in the fifth inning and left runners on the corners with one out in the 10th, unable to get even a sacrifice fly on either occasion.

Finally, with two outs in the top of the 12th, Williams pulled a two-run single to right, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.

"It's weird," said Williams, who is batting .271 and has 35 RBIs since making his debut on June 30, tops among National League rookies during that span. "I've been getting out like crazy. It's not like I was striking out. I've just been hitting balls right at people."

That was not the case in the 12th.

Philadelphia's winning rally started with a leadoff single by Daniel Nava. Pinch-runner Ricardo Pinto, a pitcher, came in and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ty Kelly. Pinto made it to third on a passed ball from catcher A.J. Ellis.

Pinto scored when Williams beat reliever Junichi Tazawa (3-4) on a 1-1 pitch.

The Phillies (52-84), who have the worst record in the majors, took three out of four games this weekend from the Marlins (67-69).

Miami trails the Colorado Rockies by five games in the National League wild-card standings. But to make the playoffs, the long-shot Marlins would also have to leap the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.

And after the Marlins lost for the fifth time in their last six games with only four hits in Sunday's loss, Marlins manager Don Mattingly indicated his team may be suffering from fatigue.

"At some point, it catches up to you, the lack of depth we have," Mattingly said. "You try to keep your (best) guys out there as much as possible."

Reliever Adam Morgan (3-1) secured the win with three scoreless innings, allowing no hits and one walk.

"However they want to use me, I'm still trying to find my niche in the game," Morgan said of his bullpen role. "I don't feel like I'm entitled to anything -- one inning, two innings. I think it's important to show versatility."

Both starting pitchers were solid, but neither one got a decision.

Miami's Jose Urena allowed six hits, one walk and one run in seven innings, striking out three.

Philadelphia's Jake Thompson, 23, made his 14th career start and struck out a career-high seven in six innings, allowing three hits, no walks and one run.

This was the fourth time Thompson was brought up to the majors this season, a sign of his struggles and his ability to lock down a spot in the rotation. But perhaps Sunday was a turnaround for him.

"It's nice to have one of those days after the things I've gone through this year," Thompson said. "It makes me feel good."

Philadelphia opened the scoring in the fifth. The Phillies produced four singles and made Urena throw 27 pitches but got just one run. Freddy Galvis had an opposite-field single, but Williams (lineout) and Tommy Joseph (groundout) both stranded the bases loaded.

Miami tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Anderson, playing his first weekend of major league baseball, pulled a leadoff double down the third-base line, advanced to third on an Ellis groundout and scored on a wild pitch in the dirt.

But that was all the offense the Marlins managed.

"This has been a tough stretch for us -- we're not scoring enough runs," Marlins center fielder Christian Yelich said. "We've still got time, but there's a sense of urgency."

NOTES: Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors with 52 homers, went 2-for-25 this week. Both of those hits were homers. ... Phillies LF Rhys Hoskins, who was hit on his right palm by a 97 mph fastball on Saturday, was not in the lineup. ... Phillies CF Pedro Florimon, who dislocated his right ankle after stepping on first base on Saturday, is likely out for the year. ... Marlins 2B Dee Gordon was rested despite being hot. Gordon has seven straight multi-hit games, the longest active streak in the majors and one short of Chris Coghlan's 2009 franchise record. ... Miami is expected to activate LHP Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) on Monday when it opens a three-game series against the visiting Washington Nationals. ... The Phillies on Monday travel to play the New York Mets.
