Yankees 2, Athletics 1: Masahiro Tanaka won for the third time in as many starts and Brett Gardner hit a go-ahead home run as New York avoided a three-game sweep at home against Oakland.

Tanaka (9-1) struck out a season-low four and matched another campaign low by working six innings, but allowed only one run on five hits and a walk to lower his ERA to an American League-best 2.02. Alfonso Soriano singled in a run to snap an 0-for-16 slump while two relievers bridged the gap from Tanaka to David Robertson, who stranded a runner at third in the ninth inning for his 13th save.

Drew Pomeranz (5-3) matched a personal best with seven strikeouts over a career-high seven frames, but took the hard-luck loss after getting charged with two runs (one earned) on six hits. John Jaso hit a solo homer and joined Brandon Moss and Stephen Vogt with two hits for Oakland, which saw its five-game winning streak snapped.

Jaso put Oakland in front in the opening frame, turning on the first pitch he saw from Tanaka and lifting a deep fly into the second deck in right. New York stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom half, but evened it in the second when Brian McCann singled and advanced to second when Moss allowed the ball to skip past him before Soriano lined the first of his two hits to right-center.

Gardner extended Pomeranz’s early struggles in the third, pounding a first-pitch fastball into the second deck to give the Yankees the lead before the southpaw settled in to retire the next 10 batters and 15 of the final 17. Tanaka did not allow a runner past second after Jaso’s blast and left two runners on in the fourth and fifth before departing after 104 pitches.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Video replay overturned what was initially ruled as a two-run homer for Yankees CF Jacoby Ellsbury in the first when he ripped a line drive off the top of the padded wall in right. Pomeranz retired 1B Mark Teixeira and DH Carlos Beltran to get out of the inning unscathed. … Tanaka is 3-0 with an 0.88 ERA since suffering his only loss in the majors against the Chicago Cubs on May 20. ... Pomeranz ended a 24-start stretch in which he failed to pitch more than 5 2/3 innings – the longest such streak since at least 1914.
