Athletics 5, Angels 3: Sonny Gray struck out five in 8 1/3 innings and Coco Crisp homered as Oakland gained a game on visiting Los Angeles.
Sam Fuld tripled in a run and scored and Alberto Callaspo added two hits for the Athletics, who drew within one game of the Angels in the American League West. Gray (13-7) surrendered three runs and six hits to end a four-start losing streak and Sean Doolittle allowed an inherited runner to score before striking out Chris Iannetta with the bases loaded to end the game and pick up his 19th save.
Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton each hit a solo home run and David Freese singled in a run in the ninth as Los Angeles had a four-game winning streak come to an end. Hector Santiago allowed two runs - one earned - but needed 98 pitches to get through five innings before Jason Grilli (1-4) came on and yielded two runs to absorb the loss.
Trout sent a 1-1 curveball out to left-center in the first but Crisp responded in the bottom half by leading off with a blast to nearly the same spot. Gray’s curveball failed to fool Hamilton in the fourth as the slugger took it out to right-center for a 2-1 Angels lead.
Crisp scored the tying run on a throwing error by Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar in the fifth, and Fuld chased Callaspo home with a triple to right-center in the sixth before coming in on Andy Parrino’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. Stephen Vogt added an insurance run with a solo home run in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Angels RH Garrett Richards (torn patellar tendon) underwent surgery earlier in the day and is expected to be out 6-to-9 months. … Los Angeles INF Gordon Beckham, who was acquired from Chicago on Thursday, is expected to join the team Saturday. … Oakland activated OF Craig Gentry from the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Dan Otero to Triple-A Sacramento.
