Angels 7, Phillies 2: Kole Calhoun went 3-for-4 and sparked a seven-run sixth inning with a lead-off homer as Los Angeles rolled past visiting Philadelphia in the opener of a two-game set.
David Freese drove in two runs and C.J. Wilson (9-8) allowed two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to win for the first time since June 24. Wilson entered the game with an 11.03 ERA over his last six starts for the Angels, who remained 3 1/2 games back of first-place Oakland in the American League West.
The Phillies, who lost for the fourth time in their last five games, pulled ahead 2-0 in the sixth on Marlon Byrd’s two-out RBI single. The Angels responded in the bottom half by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six times against three different pitchers.
Calhoun began the sixth-inning outburst with a homer off Jerome Williams, who yielded two runs over 5 1/3 innings in his first start since being claimed off waivers Sunday. Antonio Bastardo (5-6) replaced Williams with one out, allowed five of the six batters he faced to reach base and exited with the Phillies trailing 6-2 following Chris Iannetta’s RBI single.
The Angels capped the rally with Calhoun’s second hit of the inning, a run-scoring single off Jake Diekman. Darin Ruf contributed two hits and reached base three times for Philadelphia, which has lost eight in a row to the Angels.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Angels optioned RHP Caleb Clay to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled OF Brennan Boesch, who batted seventh and went 0-for-2. … Andres Blanco started at third base for the Phillies in place of Cody Asche, who is mired in a 2-for-20 slump. … Los Angeles CF Mike Trout went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, including two in the sixth inning.
