Angels 2, Tigers 1: Efren Navarro recorded two hits, including a tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning, as host Los Angeles evened the four-game series at one win apiece.
Kole Calhoun drove in a run and scored another for the Angels, who climbed within two games of first-place Oakland in the American League West. Mike Morin (3-3) escaped a jam in the sixth and Huston Street worked around a hit in the ninth for his 26th save of the year and second for Los Angeles.
All-Star Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a homer for the Tigers, who saw their lead over Kansas City in the AL Central shrink to six games. Drew Smyly (6-9) took the loss despite yielding only two runs and four hits while recording a career-best 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 frames.
After three scoreless innings, Detroit got on the board in the fourth as Cabrera led off the frame by belting Tyler Skaggs' 3-1 fastball over the wall in right field for his 16th blast. Smyly kept the Angels in check, retiring the first 13 batters he faced before wearing down in the sixth.
Chris Iannetta doubled with one out and scored on Calhoun's two-base hit to knot the contest. Smyly struck out All-Star Game MVP Mike Trout and intentionally walked Albert Pujols before Navarro plated Calhoun with a single to put Los Angeles ahead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles LF Josh Hamilton left the game after three innings with a sore left knee. ... Smyly had his perfect game broken up in the fifth as Howie Kendrick doubled with one out. ... The Angels have won 11 of their last 14 overall meetings with the Tigers and are 41-16 against Detroit since 2001.
