Rays 7, Tigers 3: Matt Joyce and Desmond Jennings each belted a two-run homer and David Price came within an out of a complete game as visiting Tampa Bay took three of four from Detroit.
Ben Zobrist and Sean Rodriguez both went 4-for-5 while James Loney and Jennings collected three hits apiece for the Rays, who finished their road trip at 9-2. Price (8-7) allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings to win for the fourth time in five starts and Jake McGee got the final out for his fifth save.
Torii Hunter recorded two hits - including a solo homer - and J.D. Martinez added a solo blast in the ninth for the Tigers. Rick Porcello (11-5), who came in with a 25-inning scoreless streak and two straight shutouts, yielded seven runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 frames.
Jennings led off the game with a double and scored on Zobrist’s single before Joyce launched his two-run shot just over the right-field wall for a 3-0 lead. Miguel Cabrera’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning got the Tigers on the board, but Evan Longoria’s RBI single in the fifth restored the three-run cushion.
The Rays broke it open in the sixth as Kevin Kiermaier plated one run with a fielder’s choice and Jennings followed with a shot into the left-field seats. Hunter hit his 11th homer to start the seventh, but the Rays avoided further damage when Eugenio Suarez fell while rounding third on Austin Jackson’s double and was tagged out to end the inning.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jennings was 8-for-19 in the series with six runs scored and four extra-base hits. … Price was the only Tampa Bay player selected to the American League All-Star team on Sunday, while 1B Cabrera, RHP Max Scherzer and DH Victor Martinez made the squad from the Tigers. Martinez (sore right side) sat out his second straight game. … Detroit placed LHP Patrick McCoy (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list and activated LHP Ian Krol, who gave up hits to the only two batters he faced Sunday.
