Rays 6, Tigers 3: Desmond Jennings collected three hits and scored three runs while Ben Zobrist had a pair of RBI doubles as visiting Tampa Bay snapped Detroit's four-game winning streak.
Evan Longoria homered among two hits and Sean Rodriguez delivered a two-run triple to help lift the Rays to their sixth win in seven games. Alex Cobb (4-6) allowed three runs on five hits over five-plus innings before Brad Boxberger and Joel Peralta bridged the gap to Jake McGee, who earned his fourth save.
J.D. Martinez had two hits and Victor Martinez added an RBI single for the Tigers, who lost for only the third time in 15 games. Drew Smyly (4-8) was tagged for five runs in 5 1/3 innings to fall to 1-4 over his last five starts.
Back-to-back doubles by Jennings and Zobrist in the third accounted for the game's first run before Longoria doubled the lead with a leadoff blast in the fourth inning. Torii Hunter got Detroit on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame, but Zobrist delivered his second run-scoring double down the left-field line in the fifth.
Smyly dug a hole for himself by hitting Longoria and walking Logan Forsythe to open the sixth, and Rodriguez made him pay with a booming triple to right-center for a 5-1 advantage. Victor Martinez singled home a run in the sixth, but Boxberger escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam by giving up only one run on Hunter's double-play groundout that made it 5-3.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Peralta made his 267th appearance with Tampa Bay, moving past Esteban Yan for the most in franchise history. ... Victor Martinez exited in the eighth inning with irritation in his back, while J.D. Martinez has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 games - raising his batting average from .242 to .327. ... Rays manager Joe Maddon was ejected on the heels of warnings to both benches after Cobb hit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler with a curveball in the bottom of the sixth inning - the third hitter that was plunked in the game.
