Tigers 5, Angels 2: Nick Castellanos and Victor Martinez homered in support of Max Scherzer as Detroit snapped a 10-game losing streak against visiting Los Angeles.
Scherzer (1-1) struck out nine while limiting the Angels to one run on three hits and walking two. Martinez, Austin Jackson and Bryan Holaday each had two hits for the Tigers.
Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson (2-2) gave up four runs - three earned - on seven hits over five innings. J.B. Shuck and Albert Pujols hit solo homers for the Angels, who lead the majors with 29 home runs. Pujols' blast was the 498th of his career.
Shuck led off the game with a shot to right on a 2-2 fastball, but the Angels didn't have any more success against Scherzer. Castellanos put the Tigers on top with his two-run blast to left in the second and Jackson added a sacrifice fly in the third.
Martinez took a 2-2 cutter from Wilson out to left in the fifth to make it 4-1 and it remained there until Ian Kinsler's sacrifice fly in the eighth added to the margin. Pujols homered to left with one out in the ninth, but Joe Nathan retired the next two hitters to end it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kinsler went 0-for-4, going hitless for only the second time in his last nine games. … Scherzer has compiled seven or more strikeouts in five straight regular-season starts dating to last season. … Angels CF Mike Trout went 0-for-4 and struck out four times for the first time in his career.
