Yankees 2, Cubs 0: Michael Pineda tossed six scoreless innings and three relievers helped finish off New York's second shutout of the day against visiting Chicago.
Pineda (2-1) allowed four hits and walked one while Adam Warren recorded the final three outs for his first save. Scott Sizemore had an RBI single among his two hits and Brett Gardner also knocked in a run for the Yankees.
Starlin Castro had two of the Cubs' six hits after they were limited to three hits in the opener of the day-night doubleheader. Travis Wood (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 frames.
Wood worked out of jams in the first and third innings to keep pace with Pineda, but the Yankees finally broke through in the fourth. Sizemore and J.R. Murphy reached ahead of Gardner's RBI single, and New York added another run in the fifth when Sizemore knocked in former Cub Alfonso Soriano.
The Cubs threatened in the ninth when Nate Schierholtz led off with an infield single against Matt Thornton and Warren issued a one-out walk to Luis Valbuena, but Welington Castillo fouled out and Ryan Kalish grounded out to short to strand runners at second and third. Chicago finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.
