Red Sox 11, Rays 3: Garin Cecchini hit his first major-league home run and Rusney Castillo recorded his first RBI as Boston evened the series with visiting Tampa Bay at a game apiece.
Xander Bogaerts had two hits and three RBIs, Daniel Nava doubled in a pair and Bryce Brentz doubled and scored twice for the Red Sox. Rookie Anthony Ranaudo (4-3) worked a career-high seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits in his final start of the season.
Jake Odorizzi (11-13) started for the Rays and allowed five runs, including three in a five-run rally in the fourth that proved to be the difference. Wil Myers and Ben Zobrist each had an RBI double and Nick Franklin chipped in a sacrifice fly as Tampa Bay fell for the fourth time in six games.
The Rays took a quick lead with two runs in the first inning but Boston got those runs back in the second, when Cecchini sent a solo blast into the bullpen in right and Bogaerts lifted a sacrifice fly to left. The Red Sox broke the game open in the fourth as Odorizzi surrendered a double, a walk and a single to load the bases before Bogaerts greeted Brandon Gomes with a two-run single off the wall in left.
Nava followed Bogaerts with a two-run double to center and eventually scored on Gomes’ wild pitch. Tampa Bay’s bullpen had some trouble getting the ball over the plate again in the sixth, when Kirby Yates walked Castillo with the bases loaded before Steven Geltz came on and issued bases-loaded walks to Christian Vazquez and Mookie Betts in a four-run uprising.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rays C Curt Casali (concussion) left the game in the fourth inning after taking a pair of hard foul balls off the mask. … Red Sox DH David Ortiz (soreness) got the night off and is day-to-day. … Tampa Bay CF Desmond Jennings (right knee soreness) and SS Yunel Escobar (left knee sprain) have been shut down for the season while C Ryan Hanigan (toe) is day-to-day.
