Rays 6, Red Sox 5 (15): Cole Figueroa scored the winning run on an error as Tampa Bay handed visiting Boston its ninth straight setback.
James Loney led off the 15th with a single off Andrew Miller (1-4) and was replaced by Figueroa, who moved to second when Miller and third baseman Brock Holt could not figure out who would handle Brandon Guyer’s bunt. Desmond Jennings followed and grounded back to the mound but no one covered second when Miller turned and the ball sailed into center field to allow the winning run to score.
Logan Forsythe and Guyer (four hits) each drove in two runs and Cesar Ramos (2-3) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief for the Rays. A.J. Pierzynski hit a three-run homer but the Red Sox failed to score in the final 14 innings to match their longest slide since 2001.
Boston did all of its damage against David Price in the first inning as Brock Holt and Xander Bogaerts led off with back-to-back singles before Dustin Pedroia walked to load the bases and Mike Carp was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. Jonny Gomes followed with a sacrifice fly in front of Pierzynski, who belted a hanging breaking ball into the front row in right field to cap the five-run rally.
The Rays chipped away against Jake Peavy with Forsythe’s sacrifice fly in the second and RBI infield single in the fourth. Matt Joyce made it 5-3 with an RBI single to center in the fifth and Guyer tied it up later in the frame when his double to left plated Evan Longoria and Joyce.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Price retired 14 in a row after the first and was charged with five runs and five hits in eight innings while Peavy was reached for five runs and eight hits in six frames. … The Red Sox placed RF Shane Victorino (hamstring) on the 15-day DL and recalled OF Daniel Nava from Triple-A Pawtucket. … Boston RHP Brandon Workman joined the team from Pawtucket and will be activated to start Sunday in place of LHP Felix Doubront (shoulder).
