Tigers 6, Red Sox 2: Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter homered in support of Anibal Sanchez as Detroit wrapped up a three-game sweep of host Boston.
Miguel Cabrera added three hits and two RBIs and Ian Kinsler went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Tigers, who have won six straight. Sanchez (1-2) was activated off the 15-day disabled list after recovering from a finger injury and limited the Red Sox to two runs - one earned - on five hits and three walks in five innings to pick up his first win.
Jake Peavy (1-2) started for Boston and was reached for five runs on 11 hits in six innings. Xander Bogaerts singled in a run among two hits as the Red Sox fell for the fourth straight time.
Boston grabbed the early lead on Bogaerts’ RBI single in the second but Detroit jumped on Peavy for three runs in the third. Kinsler doubled and scored on Cabrera’s two-out single before Martinez turned on a 1-2 changeup and sent it over the wall in right.
Cabrera’s sacrifice fly scored Kinsler to make it 4-1 in the fifth and Sanchez got out of a big jam in the bottom of the inning when he caught Grady Sizemore’s sharp liner and threw to third for a double play, snuffing out a bases-loaded rally. The Tigers added a run on Alex Avila’s single in the sixth and Hunter belted Junichi Tazawa’s first-pitch slider over the stands in left to make it a four-run cushion.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Martinez has more home runs (10) than strikeouts (nine) this season. … Cabrera has driven in 14 runs in the last eight games and has boosted his batting average from .281 to .316 over that span. … Boston gets Monday off before hosting Toronto in the opener of a three-game series while the Tigers continue their road trip at Cleveland on Monday.
