Twins 10, Yankees 4: Aaron Hicks belted a three-run homer and Minnesota benefited from a number of defensive lapses to win its first series in New York since 2001.
Justin Morneau collected three hits, scored a run and drove in another as all nine Twins recorded at least one hit. Kyle Gibson (2-2) rebounded from a pounding at the hands of the Yankees on July 4, yielding three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks over five innings.
CC Sabathia (9-8) needed 93 pitches to get through four frames – matching a season low – and was charged with eight runs (three earned) but received little help from his defense. Ichiro Suzuki plated a run in the fourth with a groundout and homered off reliever Caleb Thielbar in the seventh.
Minnesota reached Sabathia for a pair of runs in the second on RBI singles by Jamey Carroll and Pedro Florimon. The Twins took advantage of a two-out throwing error by shortstop Eduardo Nunez in the third, which gave Hicks an opportunity to pound a first-pitch changeup from Sabathia into the seats in left-center.
Robinson Cano put the Yankees on the board with a run-scoring single in the third, but Morneau’s infield single with the bases loaded in the fourth got back the run. First baseman Lyle Overbay’s misplay of Ryan Doumit’s routine grounder one pitch later allowed two more unearned runs to score, giving Minnesota an 8-1 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Twins’ offensive output was their best at Yankee Stadium since a 13-12 loss on May 17, 2002. … Sabathia, who recorded his 200th career victory at Minnesota on July 3, lost to the Twins for the first time in 13 starts. The eight runs marked only the second time he allowed that many in a regular-season game as a member of the Yankees and were the most he surrendered to Minnesota since July 2006. … The Twins handed the Yankees their first series loss – regular season or playoffs – since they took two of three from New York at home on Aug. 11-13, 2008.
