Cubs 8, Angels 6 (10): Anthony Rizzo hit a bases-clearing double with two outs in the 10th inning as visiting Chicago snapped its three-game losing streak.
After Mark Trumbo hit a game-tying homer in the eighth, the Cubs loaded the bases in the 10th against Robert Coello (2-2) before Rizzo sliced a 2-1 fastball down the first-base line. Kevin Gregg (2-0) worked 1 1/3 innings for the win.
Chicago trailed 4-1 in the fifth before Cody Ransom launched a three-run blast off Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas, who allowed five runs on 11 hits over five-plus innings. Vargas was pulled after surrendering hits to the first three batters in the sixth, capped by Ryan Sweeney’s RBI single that put the Cubs ahead 5-4.
Howie Kendrick blasted a two-run homer in the first off Cubs starter Matt Garza, who gave up four runs over 6 1/3 innings on a season-high 103 pitches. Kendrick had four hits and Trumbo hit his second homer of the game in the 10th for the Angels, who have lost five of their last six games.
Sweeney turned in the defensive play of the game when he made a diving catch on Albert Pujols’ liner to center field with runners at the corners and two outs in the seventh. The top of the Los Angeles lineup - Erick Aybar, Mike Trout and Pujols - combined to go 1-for-14.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago won for the second time in 30 games when allowing at least four runs. … A foul ball hit by Angels LF J.B. Shuck in the second inning was originally called a home run before the umpires used video replay to overturn the ruling. … Cubs LHP James Russell allowed his first home run in 30 games this season on Trumbo’s blast to left-center field in the eighth.
