Yankees 9, White Sox 1: Derek Jeter delivered a pair of RBI singles, including one in an eight-run fourth inning, and David Huff pitched 5 2/3 solid innings of relief following a rain delay to help host New York snap a six-game losing streak against Chicago.
Austin Romine contributed a two-run single in the fourth - when the first seven batters reached base against Dylan Axelrod - as the Yankees closed to within 2 1/2 games of Tampa Bay for the second wild card in the American League. Huff (2-0) yielded one run and five hits while striking out three.
Paul Konerko hit his 432nd career home run - moving him past Cal Ripken Jr. and into 44th on the all-time list - for the White Sox, who have dropped four straight. Chicago's Jose Quintana (7-5) suffered the loss after allowing Jeter's RBI single in the first inning before play was halted in the top of the second.
Axelrod took over after the 1:53 delay and pitched two scoreless innings before yielding eight runs (six earned) and seven hits in the fourth. Mark Reynolds' RBI infield hit was followed by Romine's two-run single, Brett Gardner's RBI double and Jeter's infield hit which caromed off Axelrod.
After Robinson Cano popped out to become the first batter retired, Alfonso Soriano delivered a run-scoring double. Alex Rodriguez followed with a walk before Vernon Wells hit a grounder to Adam Dunn, whose throw to force out Rodriguez at second sailed into center field, allowing two runs to score.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees starter Phil Hughes allowed one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless innings to stretch his winless streak to 10 starts . ... Jeter tied Eddie Collins for ninth on the career hits list with 3,313, according to Elias Sports Bureau, and is six shy of eighth-place Paul Molitor. ... The Yankees have used a record 52 players this season after LHP Cesar Cabral and C J.R. Murphy made their major-league debuts in the eighth inning. Murphy recorded an infield hit pinch-hitting for Cano and Cabral allowed a single and struck out two in an inning. The previous mark of 51 was set in 2005 and 2008.
